Very few of us have very physically demanding jobs like the vast majority of the population prior to the 20th century. Taking this into consideration, along with the fact that there is fastfood restaurant on every corner, leading a healthy lifestyle requires deliberate intentions.

Healthy Eating

Eat a variety of nutritious foods from all the food groups. Educate yourself on how many calories you should be eating and drinking to maintain your weight. Nutrition and calorie information on food labels is typically based on a 2,000 calorie diet. You may need fewer or more calories depending on several factors including age, gender, and level of physical activity.

Regular Exercise

Being physically active is important to prevent heart disease and stroke. Also, regular physical activity can help you maintain your weight, keep off weight that you lose and help you reach physical and cardiovascular fitness. If it’s hard to schedule regular exercise sessions, try aiming for sessions of at last 10 minutes spread throughout the week.

Regular Checkups

During a checkup, your doctor can make sure you are up to date for any suggested screening tests. Screening tests are used to detect disease before symptoms appear. The goal of screening is to find disease early so that it can be managed or reduce the likelihood that the disease will make you very ill. In cases where indviduals are already diagnosed with ailments, they amy need to see their practitioner more frequently than yearly visits.

In one study, people with type 2 diabetes exercised for 175 minutes a week, limited their calories to 1,200 to 1,800 per day, and got weekly counseling and education on these lifestyle changes. Within a year, about 10% got off their diabetes medications or improved to the point where their blood sugar level was no longer in the diabetes range, and was instead classified as prediabetes.
